I tried for a while on Oppo ...didn't really take off and it was a ton of work. I think you are going to find a deaf ear over at jalopnik. Low hits, low comments.

I think it was because of the overwhelming amount of comments each day. Too much to read. Back then there were a lot fewer comments to consider.

too much work for too little payoff. it was poorly read and commented on. I loved it, but thats the way it goes. Its the manual transmission of Jalonik.com

There has to be a database of comments behind the scenes right?

So just :

select * from comment_table where stars > 0 and insert_date > todays_date - 1 order by stars desc;

Then just read the top X that are returned.

while I would imagine such a thing is possible, it would completely rule out many comments. A decent percentage of the cotds were conversations, or little read threads or comments, it was never purely a popularity contest.

True, but you could also add in stuff like comment length, amount of replies etc etc. There's got to be some algorithm that can be put together to cut down the noise.

I read them all for years (and gave out beer "awards"), and any programmatic method would miss some of the finer ones. Or ones that were late in the day. Or hilarious oneliners.

Of course to be fair, the logic should start with: subroutineAsh78CommentHistoryToday=true, then choose(random, x, StarCountRank), if false then...blahblahblah

Not sure if joking... (That's basically what they did, and then there was an issue with interns, and though Jalopnik continued with the COTD for a while after, the readership dropped a lot. Cost/Benefit had to have been a factor. even if not a primary one.

Think the search function is good enough now to look for the string "COTD" or "#COTD"? If so, Jalops and Opponauts could start using that reply, like we used to, and nominated comments could be found that way.

I would imagine it would be possible. But I think we're overthinking it. I think that a return should be in a format that works for them. Perhaps even a separate blogspace for it. (cotd.jalopnik.com?)

I'm going to share is a couple more times tomorrow and hopefully get enough stars and comments to at least warrant a response.

The idea of having a subblog just for COTD noms that all un-grayed Jalops and OPPO authors can share worthy comments to is a good idea.

I know for a fact that the Jalopnik guys are using OppoBlog to find stories for the front page.

I also think it had to do with the early stages of Kinja.

The early comment viewing was so fucked up, not even the editors could figure out who was talking to who. They changed it from "Comment OTD" to "Conversation OTD" for a while and then dropped it.

You can scan the comments and find the most recommended one must easier now. Maybe they could start it up again.

Ehh, I don't know... it didn't bring them a lot of revenue or publicity as it was only posted once every ten years, and I think it was a hugely difficult project to undertake, documenting and rating every single codfish on the planet constantly.

I remember reading it on my govvie pc in garrison but because of NMCI, I never had a login until the social media craze hit the world. I think I officially started reading jalopnik in 2005-2006

Look at some of the other comments - there has to be a way of using Kinja's metrics to sort out good candidates so it's not such a laborious process.

Gamecat had a nice idea of creating a subblog that we could all submit COTD noms to.

So, I think we should just go ahead and make cotdnoms.kinja.com , give all OPPO authors rights to share there, and then start publicizing it. Grassroots efforts are usually the best way to make something happen.
